A high performance main bearing cap has particular surfaces densified for improved fatigue crack resistance. The surfaces densified are the bolted face (F) inside of a perimetral margin and outside of bold head interface areas around the main bolt holes (B), the surfaces of the main bolt holes and the side bolt hole threads (S). Preferred methods of densification are single needle programmable pattern peening of the bolted face peened area, over- burnishing of the bolt holes, and forming the threads rather than cutting them for the side bolt threads.
L'invention concerne un chapeau principal haute performance possédant des surfaces particulières densifiées afin d'améliorer la résistance aux criques de fatigue. Les surfaces densifiées sont des faces (F) boulonnées à l'intérieur d'un bord périmétrique et à l'extérieur de zones d'interface de tête de boulon autour des trous de boulon principaux (B), des surfaces des trous de boulon principaux et des filetages latéraux de trous de boulon (S). Les procédés préférés de densification sont: le martelage de motifs programmables à aiguille unique de la zone martelée de la face boulonnée, le surbrunissage de trous de boulon, et la formation de filetages plutôt que la coupe de ceux-ci pour les filetages latéraux de boulon.
