SURFACE EFFECT ICE BREAKER ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An ice breaker mechanism for use with conventional vessels in ice covered offshore areas. The ice breaking mechanism includes a deck member attached to the prow of the vessel and having a flexible skirt extending down from the deck to the surface being traversed by the vessel. Fans located in the deck are used to force air beneath the deck within the confines of the skirt to provide a pressure on top of the ice and to force air beneath the ice. This appar- atus acts in the same manner and is constructed similar to a conventional surface effect vehicle.
