This invention provides a thin unsupported indicia containing layer (4) for modifying the appearance of a surface. The indicia containing layer (4) may be contained in a laminate structure that includes an adhesive coating (2) applied to the lower surface of the indicia containing layer, at least one removable protective layer, and a release coating for facilitating the transfer of the indicia containing layer (4) from the removable protective coating onto the surface to be modified. The invention also provides methods and systems for modifying the appearance of a surface using the indicia containing layer (4).
