Water-dispersible nanoparticles are prepared by applying a coating of a multiply amphipathic dispersant to the surface of a hydrophobic nanoparticle comprised of a semiconductive or metallic material. The multiply amphipathic dispersant has two or more hydrophobic regions and two or more hydrophilic regions, and is typically polymeric. Preferred polymeric dispersants are comprised of (1) a hydrophobic backbone with hacdrophilic branches, (2) a hydrophilic backbone with hydrophobic branches, or (3) a backbone that may be either hydrophobic or hydrophilic, and substituted with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic branches. Monodisperse populations of water-dispersible nanoparticles are also provided, as are conjugates of the water-dispersible nanoparticles with afinity molecules such as peptides, oligonucleotides, and the like.

L'invention porte sur des nanoparticules dispersables dans l'eau obtenues par application d'un revêtement d'un dispersant amphiphathique multiple sur la surface d'une nanoparticule hydrophobe contenant un matériau semi-conducteur ou métallique. Le dispersant amphiphathique multiple, comportant deux ou plusieurs régions hydrophobes et deux ou plusieurs régions hydrophiles est normalement un polymère. De préférence, les dispersants polymères sont constitués (1) d'un squelette hydrophobe à ramifications hydrophiles, (2) d'un squelette hydrophile à ramifications hydrophobes ou (3) d'un squelette qui peut être soit hydrophobe soit hydrophile et substitué par des ramifications à la fois hydrophiles et hydrophobes. Des populations monodispersées de nanoparticules dispersables dans l'eau font également l'objet de cette invention, de même que des conjugués de nanoparticules dispersables dans l'eau avec des molécules d'affinité, dont des peptides, des oligonucléotides et analogues.
