A bearing blank is cast or machined of iron to a configuration near a final shape of a desired bearing element (10). A first surface (12) of the bearing blank, corresponding to a sliding surface of the desired bearing element, is remelted while other portions of the bearing blank remain in a solid state. The remelted first surface (18) is quenched such that fine particles of iron carbide precipitate in a remelted zone having an increased hardness and a decreased presence of graphite particles. A bearing element having a core portion composed of iron and an integral first surface portion including a precipitate of fin iron carbide particles, and having greater hardness and lesser incidence of graphite particles than the core portion, is also described.
Une ébauche de palier en fer est coulée ou usinée de façon à présenter une configuration proche de la forme finale d'un élément (10) de palier désiré. Une première surface (12) de l'ébauche de palier, correspondant à une surface de glissement de l'élément de palier désiré, est refondue tandis que d'autres parties de l'ébauche de palier restent à l'état solide. La première surface refondue (18) est trempée si bien que de fines particules de carbure de fer précipitent dans une zone refondue ayant une dureté accrue et une teneur réduite en particules de graphite. Un élément de palier doté d'une partie centrale composée de fer et d'une première surface constituée d'un seul tenant avec la partie centrale est décrit. Ladite surface comporte un précipité de fines particules de carbure de fer et possède une plus grande dureté et un taux plus faible de particules de graphite que la partie centrale.
