Stainless steel is used in a number of applications in petrochemical refineries. Some of the components in the stainless steel tend to catalyse the coking of petrochemicals during processing. The present invention is directed to a treatment of stainless steel tube to produce an internal oxide layer which has a low potential to coke feedstocks in contact with the steel at high temperatures. The process involves a treatment at elevated temperatures with a dry reducing atmosphere (e.g. one which is oxygen free or essentially oxygen free) and a subsequent treatment at elevated temperatures with wet hydrogen. The process is particularly useful for treatment of tubes used in an ethylene furnace.
