ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of reducing scale and deposits in alkaline process waters used in ferrous and non-ferrous metal working industries which comprises treating said waters with from 0.1 ppm but not more than 5 ppm of an organic phosphorous-containing compound from the group consisting of: A. Triethanolamine phosphate; B. An aminophosphate having the formula: Image where R is Image R' is R or --CH2CH2OH, and R" is R, --CH2CH2OH, or Image where M is II, NH4, alkali metal, or combination thereof, and "n" is 1 to 6; C. A compound having the formula: Image and the water-soluble salts thereof R being hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or alkinyl having up to 4 carbon atoms; phenyl; cycloalkyl having 3 to 6 carbon atoms; benzyl; phenethyl or Image wherein R' is hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or carboxyl, R" is hydrogen or methyl and R"' is carboxyl. -2-
