A surge arrester has a varistor element (6) . A first and a second mounting body (7, 8) are pressed against the varistor element (6) by means of a clamping device. At least one of the mounting bodies (7, 8) has a shoulder (9a, 9b, 9c, 9d) on which a cross member (1, 2) of the clamping device is supported. A tensioning leg (5a, 5b) is fitted to the cross member (1, 2).
