Abstract of the Disclosure A surge voltage absorbing apparatus has a transparent tube and a surge voltage absorbing element contained within the transparent tube to evolve heat upon discharge. The surge voltage absorbing element has a pair of lead wires, one of which extends directly out of the tube and fixed in place. A coil spring is disposed in the tube and has one end soldered to the corresponding lead wire of the surge voltage absorbing element and the other end portion extending out of the tube. A discharge occurs in the surge voltage absorbing element upon the flow of a surge current by lighting, causing a solder spot to be broken to allow a terminal device to be open-circuited. It is thus possible to protect the terminal device from a large surge current.
