This invention is a surgical instru- ment sharp end foil (10) for receiving and trapping the free end (24) of a surgical instruments sharp (22) such as a syringe needle, said sharp (22) having a restrained end (25) opposite said free end (24) and a longitudinal axis (27) extending between said restrained and free ends (25, 24), said foil (10) comprising a housing (30) having a sharps receiving portion (100), a grip- ping element (70) for engaging the free end (24) of the chosen sharp, a wedging element (64) for engaging the gripping el- ement (70), and a biasing element (80) for urging the wedging element (64) and the gripping element (70) into engagement.
