A surgical needle is disclosed. The needle comprises a cold drawn, age hardened iron-base alloy containing, by weight, about 9-13 per cent chromium, about 8-16 per cent cobalt, about 4-8 per cent molybdenum, about 4-8 per cent nickel, the balance being essentially iron and incidental impurities, in which said elements are balanced to provide an austenite retention index ("ARI") value of from about 18 to 22.8, as calculated from the equation: ARI = % Ni + 0.8(% Cr) + 0.6(% Mo)+ 0.3(% Co),
