ABSTRACT A surgical staple adapted to join the severed skin or fascia of a body comprising, prior to emplacement, a curved central portion and straight portions extending upwardly and outwardly from opposite ends of said curved central portion at obtuse angles. Further straight portions extend down- wardly and outwardly from curved portions connecting the upwardly and outwardly straight extending portions with the downwardly and outwardly straight extending portions. All of the straight portions are about equal in length to each other. Substantially all of the portions nest against adjacent staples when stacked end to end with the top of the curved central portion juxtaposed to the bottom of the curved central portion of the next adjacent staple, thereby maximizing the number of staples stackable within one inch.
