ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for reading data in bar code form includes a television camera, a lens system for focussing an image of the bar code onto a light responsive element of the camera and deflection apparatus for sweeping an electron beam across the image to convert the bar code into an electrical signal that is processed to provide data read-out. The coded data is read irrespective of image orientation by a novel arrangement that rotates the beam to provide a complete sweep of the image. Start and stop marks which precede and terminate the coded data are included in the electrical signal and signify that all of the coded data has been read. In one embodiment, the deflection apparatus is mechanically rotated. Other embodiments include circuits for generating and shaping predetermined signals for electrically driving the deflection apparatus to simulate mechanical rotation.
