ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A swimming pool cleaner of the type wherein an interruption of the flow of water through the cleaner is utilized to provide a pro- pulsive force to cause the cleaner to move auto- matically across the surface to be cleaned. The cleaner device is characterized in that the flow path through the cleaner includes an automatic valve assembly which comprises a body having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. A flow passage is provided between the inlet and the outlet and is at least partly defined by a tubular member which is transversely contractable and expansible over at least a part of its length to cause the interrupt- ion of the flow of water through the cleaner in use.
