ABSTRACT A switch for an inductive load is provided. The switch includes a first field effect transistor connecting one terminal of the load to the high potential terminal of a power supply and a second field effect transistor connecting the other terminal of the load to the low potential terminal of the power supply. The transistors are operable to connect and disconnect the load between the power supply terminals. A plurality of parallel current paths are associated with each transistor and include an inductor connected in series with a diode. One group of current paths extend from the one terminal of the load to the low potential terminal of the power supply while the other group of current paths extend from the other terminal of the load to the high potential terminal of the power supply. A choke energy path is associated with each current path and includes a diode connected in series with a resistor. The choke energy paths associated with the one group of current paths have one terminal thereof connected to the high potential terminal of the power supply and the other terminal thereof connected to the junction of the diode and inductor. The choke energy paths associated with the other group of current paths have their one terminals connected to the low potential terminal of the power supply. The inductors in the current paths operate to inhibit reverse recovery current through the diodes and the choke energy paths operate to dissipate energy stored in the current path inductors due to reverse recovery currents and to dissipate oscillation energy in the switch upon operation of the transistors to connect the inductive load to the power supply.
