Attorney's Docket 6909 INVENTORS: ROBERT LEUTWYLER and WALTER M?LLER INVENTION: SWITCHABLE PERMANENT MAGNETIC BRAKE WITH POLE PIECES OF ALTERNATING POLARITY AT WHICH NEIGHBOR STATIONARY AND ROTATABLE PERMANENT MAGNETS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A brake is disclosed wherein the effective pole iron, composed of a pole piece and a respective pole shoe of both neighboring rotatable or turnable permanent magnets, is surrounded by poles of the same polarity of the neighboring stationary and rotatable or turnable permanent magnets in the energized or switched-on position. For the purpose of avoiding undesired stray effects from the effective pole iron at the ends of the air gap the permanent magnets protrude at such corner region past the surfaces of the neighboring pole pieces and pole shoes, respectively.
