A switched reluctance machine capable of improved operation under fault conditions. The machine includes a controller which responds to a fault in a phase winding by cutting off current to the phase windings of all stator poles that are aligned with a rotor pole at the time the stator pole having the phase winding with the fault therein aligned with a rotor pole. Consequently, there is no magnetic flux in the stator or rotor at such time. Therefore, no current is induced in the faulted phase winding. This avoids generation of a counter torque, as well as avoiding potential catastropic failure of the SR machine.

Machine à réluctance commutée capable de fonctionner correctement dans des conditions anormales; elle inclut un contrôleur, qui réagit à la défaillance d'un enroulement de phases en coupant le courant d'alimentation des enroulements de phases de tous les pôles du stator qui sont alignés sur un pôle du rotor au moment où le pôle du stator abritant l'enroulement de phases défectueux s'aligne sur un pôle du rotor. Par conséquent, pendant ledit moment, il n'y pas de flux magnétique ni dans le stator, ni dans le rotor; partant, il n'y a pas de courant induit dans l'enroulement de phases défectueux. Le système décrit permet d'éviter l'apparition d'un couple de réaction et d'exclure la possibilité d'une panne catastrophique de la machine SRM.
