U.S. 944,633 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE (SEE FIGURE 1) First through fourth NPN switching transistors 1, 3, 5, 7 having bases receptive of first through fourth control signals, respectively, are connected in cascode between a first terminal 9, for receiving an operat- ing voltage +El, and a second terminal 11 for receiving a source of re- ference potential. The common connection between the second 3 and third S transistors is connected to an output terminal 19. A first diode is is connected between a third terminal 13 for receiving a clamping voltage æ 2 and the common connection between the uppermost first 1 and second 3 transistors, the diode 15 being polarized for clamping this common con- nection from not going lower than +E2 volts. A second diode 17 is con- nected between the third terminal 13 and the common connection between the lowermost third 5 and fourth 7 transistors, this second diode 17 being polarized for clamping its associated common connection-to a maximum voltage of +E2 volts. The difference between the operating and clamping voltages (El-E2) is set to be less than the VCEX of the four transistors 1, 3, 5, 7 (breakdown voltage from collector to emitter with some backbias voltage on the base), thereby permitting the switching of an operating voltage or load voltages that are substantially greater than the VCEX rating of the transistors. In one switching state only the second 3 and third 5 transistors are turned on for providing bidirectional current flow between the voltage source of +E2 volts and a load connected to the output terminal 19.
