An electrical receptacle includes a nonconductive con- tact carrier that mounts a set of female electrical contacts that are configured to receive and conductively engage plural conduc- tive prongs of a male plug. The carrier has a generally cylin- drical outer wall that is received within a generally cylindrical chamber that is defined by a nonconductive housing. The housing mounts the carrier for rotation about a center axis that extends centrally through the chamber. When the carrier is rotated about the center axis relative to the housing to an "on" position (that resides within a relatively wide angular range of "on" posi- tions), housing-carried electrical contacts that extend through housing-defined passages engage carrier-carried electrical con- tacts that extend through carrier-defined passages. When the carrier is rotated about the center axis relative to the housing to an "off" position, electrical connection is interrupted be- tween selected pairs of the housing-carried and carrier-carried contacts. A detent preferably is interposed between the carrier and the housing for releasably retaining the rotatable carrier in its "off" position. The rotatability of the carrier while remai- ning within its range of "on" positions permits a male electrical plug (and an appliance cord or other form of electrical wire that is attached to the plug) to be oriented as desired relative to the receptacle for such purposes as minimizing wear and tear, and/or to accommodate the positioning of furniture at locations near where the receptacle is installed.
Cette invention concerne une prise électrique qui comprend un porte-contacts non conducteur dans lequel est monté un jeu de contacts électriques femelles configurés pour recevoir une série de broches d'une fiche. Le porte-contact à paroi extérieure généralement cylindrique se loge dans une enceinte généralement cylindrique ménagée dans un bâti non conducteur. Ce bâti reçoit le porte-contacts en ajustement tournant autour d'un axe de rotation centré dans ladite enceinte. Lorsqu'on fait tourner le porte-contacts autour de son axe de rotation à l'intérieur du bâti vers une position "ON" (en fait, une plage angulaire relativement large de positions "ON"), les contacts électriques du bâti logés dans des passages y définis touchent les contacts électriques du porte-contacts également logés dans des passages ménagés dans celui-ci. Lorsqu'on fait tourner le porte-contacts autour de son axe de rotation à l'intérieur du bâti vers une position "OFF", le contact électrique est rompu entre paires choisies de contacts du bâti et du porte-contacts. De préférence, un mécanisme de détente est interposé entre le porte-contacts et le bâti pour retenir de façon amovible le porte-contacts tournant en position "OFF". Le caractère rotatif du porte-contacts fait en sorte qu'à l'intérieur de la plage de positions "ON", la fiche (et le cordon ou autre conducteur électrique y attaché) devient orientable pour fins de réduction d'usure ou pour s'adapter selon l'emplacement du mobilier installé à proximité de la prise.
