A switchmode AC power controller for controlling the current through a load (70) such as a large lamp array connected to an alternating current source. The controller contains an AC solid state switch (20), a synchro-flywheel(30) an output inductor (40) and capacitor (50). The load current is controlled by triggering signals generated by a synchronized modulator (120).
