Abstract: The present invention relates to an improvement in a data processor which is programmable in a symbolic programming language. The processor has a main memory for storing data objects each having an identifying type field and a central processing unit for operating on at least one data object from the main memory. The improvement is comprised on providing a unit for separating the type field from the remainder of each data object prior to the operation thereon by the central processing unit. A unit is provided for checking the separated type field with respect to the operation on the remainder of the associated data object and for generating a new type field in accordance with the operation in parallel with the operation on the data object. Finally, a unit is provided for combining the new type field with the results of the operation.
