A method and structure for the distribution and utilization of synchronization within an asychronous network is described herein. Synchronization is distributed throuhg an asynchronous network via a synchronization symbol periodically inserted on the MAC layer. The priority of this symbol ensures that this symbol is inserted in the MAC layer data stream ahead of all other types of symbols. The insertion of the synchronization symbol in the middle of an ongoing data frame is supported. In addition, a method for synchronization symbol distribution throughout an asynchronous network is presented, along with a method for switching to a new synchronization path (in the event of loss of original synchronization path) based on minimum number of hops from the synchronization source. In addition, a method is described for utilization of the count and interval of received synchronization symbols and the count and interval of trnasmitted synchronization symbols to generate an error correction signal used in the process of frequency locking of a device's internal hardware to received synchronization symbols from another device. Using the prioritized insertion capability required fro synchronization symbols, a variety of other MAC layer contorl symbols are defined to perform other functions, such as propagation time measurement between adjacent nodes.
L'invention porte sur un procédé et une structure de distribution et d'utilisation de la synchronisation dans un réseau asynchrone. La synchronisation est distribuée dans un réseau asynchrone via un symbole de synchronisation inséré périodiquement sur la couche MAC. La priorité de ce symbole s'assure que ce symbole est inséré dans le flux de données de la couche MAC, en amont de tous les autres types de symboles. L'insertion du symbole de synchronisation au milieu d'une trame de données continue est supportée. L'invention porte, de plus, sur un procédé de distribution de symboles de synchronisation dans un réseau asynchrone, ainsi que sur un procédé de commutation à une nouvelle voie de synchronisation (en cas de perte de la voie de synchronisation originale) sur la base d'un nombre minimal de sauts à partir de la source de synchronisation. L'invention porte encore sur un procédé d'utilisation du nombre et des intervalles des symboles de synchronisation reçus et transmis afin de générer un signal de correction d'erreur utilisé dans le processus de verrouillage de fréquence d'un mécanisme interne du dispositif par rapport aux symboles de synchronisation reçus d'un autre dispositif. Au moyen de la capacité d'insertion par ordre de priorité requise pour les symboles de synchronisation, d'autres symboles de commande divers de la couche MAC sont définis pour effectuer d'autres fonctions telles que la mesure du temps de propagation entre des noeuds adjacents.
