A method and apparatus for stabilizing a welding arc is disclosed. The apparatus includes a source of welding current connected across the welding terminal and the workpiece terminal and an impulse transformer. A switch is provided to controllably connect the impulse transformer in parallel with the source of welding current when the arc needs to be started or re-established. The source of power may be ac or dc, and in one embodiment is a sinusoidal ac source. The method includes the steps of providing a welding current connected to the welding terminal and the workpiece terminal and connecting a voltage pulse to the terminals. In one embodiment the voltage pulse is applied across the welding terminals in the event there is no welding arc. In a second embodiment the power for the pulse is derived from the welding output.
