SYNCHRONIZED TRANSMISSION Abstract of the Disclosure A tractor transmission is synchronized between four dif- ferent speeds in each of two different high and low ranges and a reverse range using an effective and relatively compact arrange- ment of elements. A top shaft coupled to be driven by the tractor engine has four different gears concentrically and ro- tatably spaced along the length thereof with each of the four gears being in constant mesh with a different one of a second group of four gears formed on the outer surface of a counter shaft. The counter shaft which is journaled for rotation about a differential drive shaft is selectively coupled to the top shaft by either of two pairs of synchronizers concentrically mounted on the top shaft between different pairs of the first four gears and operative to engage one of the first four gears to the top shaft in synchronized fashion. High and low ranges of four different speeds are respectively provided by a first splined collar capable of coupling the counter shaft directly to the differential drive shaft and a second splined collar capable of coupling the differential drive shaft to a low range driven gear which meshes with a portion of the fourth gear disposed about the top shaft. The top shaft is optionally coupled to the tractor engine via a planetary gear arrangement which utilizes a pair of clutches coupled between a rotatable carrier with included planetary gear arrangement to couple the carrier to a stationary housing or to the top shaft via an arrangement of sun gears to provide either underdrive or direct drive. Upon loss of hydraulic fluid pressure required to bias the clutches into the direct drive condition, the planetary gear arrangement is automatically returned to the underdrive condition by mechanical springs within the two clutches. Similar safety features are provided in connection with the front wheel drive portion of the transmission by use of a clutch biased by mechanical springs into the desired condition in the event of loss of hydraulic fluid pressure.
