ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A high voltage synchronous machine comprises a rotor and an annular stator core including a plurality of axially extending inwardly directed winding slots. A winding is disposed in the slots comprising top and bottom coil halves, each half having a rectangular cross-section and a plurality of strands insulated from each other, each of the coil halves having a center line running along its entire length, the center line of the bottom coil half being congruent with the center line of the top coil half. The bottom coil half has a straight bottom portion located at the bottom of a winding slot, and the top coil half has a straight top portion located at the top of another winding slot. The straight portions are connected in series with each other at a stator end through a top coil end half serially connected through a connecting device with a bottom coil end half. The top coil end half has a first radially inwardly directed surface portion adjacent the straight top portion, and a second radially inwardly directed surface portion a greater distance from the straight top portion, the first surface portion being spaced from an air gap provided by the stator and rotor a greater radial distance than the second surface portion.
