ABSTRACT This invention relates to brushless A.C. exciters for rim-type hydro-electric generators. The usual construction of brushless A.C. exciters has a rotating armature having ring punchings or, in the case of larger diameter exciters, a core built up of over- lapping layers of punching segments clamped between endplates. To overcome several disadvantages inherent in the usual construction the present invention describes a brushless A.C. exciter comprising a stationary field pole system and an annular rotating armature comprising a series of independently wound separate segments independ- ently mounted on the generator rotor with gaps between the segments. Each segment comprises an independently wound and impregnated core section independently mounted on a bracket system carried by the generator rotor.
