The present invention is based on the discovery that electroporation of a photosensitive agent in a cell and subsequent activation of the agent provides more effective killing of the electroporated cell than cells exposed to a photosensitive agent alone. The invention provides a method and apparatus for inhibiting cell growth or enhancing cell death. The method includes providing a photosensitive agent to a cell; applying an electric pulse to the cell of a sufficient strength and duration to electroporate the cell with the photosensitive agent, and applying light of an activatable wavelength to the cell thereby activating the agent and inhibiting cell growth or enhancing cell death.

La présente invention repose sur la constatation que l'électroporation d'un agent photosensible dans une cellule, puis l'activation de cet agent, est plus efficace pour tuer les cellules considérées qu'une simple exposition de ces cellules à un agent photosensible. L'invention concerne donc un procédé et un dispositif permettant de bloquer la croissance cellulaire ou de renforcer la mort cellulaire. En l'occurrence, on commence par apporter un agent photosensible à une cellule. On applique ensuite à la cellule une impulsion électrique d'une force et d'une durée qui suffisent à l'électroporation de l'agent photosensible dans la cellule. On soumet enfin la cellule à une lumière d'une longueur d'ondes permettant d'activer l'agent et de bloquer la croissance cellulaire ou de renforcer la mort cellulaire.
