ABSTRACT A cytoprotective composition for protecting against oxyradical damage caused by ischemia - reperfusion injury to body organs and tissues is provided. The composition includes a gallate compound and trolox, which is a hydrophilic analogue of .alpha.-tocopherol. The two ingredients act together synergistically to provide a composition administrable to a patient's blood, effectively to protect cells, organs and tissue from free radical damage.
