ABSTRACT Disclosed is a polystyrenic composition having improved fire retardant properties, the composition com- prising a polystyrenic resin, a fire retardant amount of halogenated organic fire retardant agent selected from the group consisting of acetylene tetrabromide, dibromotetra- chloroethane, tetrachloroethane, pentachloroethane, hexa- chlorobenzene, hexabromobenzene, hexachlorobenzene, hexabromobenzene, tetrabromobutane, polyhalobiphenols, polyhalobiphenolethers, perhalopentacyclododecanes, pentabromomonochlorocyclohexane, and mixtures thereof, and a benzotriazolic compound having the formula Image wherein R1 is H or -CH3 and R2 is H or -CH2N(R3)2 wherein R3 is H, an alkyl radical containing from about 1 to 12 carbon atoms or -CH2CH2OH in the amount from about 1 and 50% of the weight of the fire retardant agent. The composition may be used in producing shaped or molded forms from expandable polystyrene beads or extruded shapes of mixtures of polystyrene and a foaming agent.
