ABSTRACT A digital computer includes a syntax examination and correction system which operates as follows. When a programming statement is keyed in and displayed on the computer monitor in simple black on white format the structure of the statement is examined in accordance with a predetermined set of syntax rules. Each character within the statement is then given a pre- determined color indicia if it falls within the syntax rules but remains black if it is not in accord with the rules. If there are any non-colored characters these are ignored and the remaining characters are examined to determine whether an acceptable program statement is defined. If it is, an altered program statement consisting only of the colored characters is entered but, if not, the colored characters are all changed to a single shading such as grey indicating that the statement cannot be interpreted correctly. The system assists novices in programming.
