ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing synthesis gas comprising the steps of solvent deasphalting heavy hydrocarbonaceous oil and a mixture of carbonaceous materials and light hydrocarbonaceous oil by using light hydrocarbonaceous oil as a deasphalting oil; and partially oxidising a resulting mixture of the carbonaceous materials and asphalt to produce synthesis gas. The mixture of carbonaceous materials and light hydrocarbonaceous oil is obtained by bringing a slurry containing carbonaceous materials generated as a byproduct in the partial oxidation of the mixture of the carbonaceous materials and asphalt in water into contact with light hydrocarbonaceous oil. The oil phase and the aqueous phase are separated from the resultant mixture.
