ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing synthesis gas comprising the steps of solvent deasphalting heavy hydrocarbonaceous oil and a mixture of carbonaceous materials and heavy hydrocarbonaceous oil by using light hydrocarbonaceous oil as a deasphalting oil; and partially oxidizing a resulting mixture of the carbonaceous materials and asphalt to produce synthesis gas. The mixture of carbonaceous materials and heavy hydrocarbonaceous oil is obtained by bringing a slurry containing carbonaceous materials by-produced in the partial oxidation of the mixture of the carbonaceous materials and asphalt in water into contact with light hydrocarbonaceous oil, followed by separating the oil phase and the aqueous phase from the resultant mixture, adding heavy hydrocarbon- aceous oil to the separated mixture of the carbonaceous materials and the light hydrocarbonaceous oil and removing the light hydrocarbonaceous oil from the resultant mixture.
