Disclosed are methods of producing di-, tri- or tetrabenzyl-metal compounds comprising combining a metal salt with a (benzyl)n MgX2-n compound at from less than 3O°C, wherein n is 1 or 2 and X is a monoanionic group; wherein the combining takes place in a diluent mixture comprising from 0 to 80 % by volume of an ether diluent and a diluent selected from the group consisting of aromatic diluents, halogenated hydrocarbon diluents, and mixtures thereof. The methods are characterized by employing various mixtures of diluents, and in some cases, minimal to no ether diluent.

L'invention concerne des procédés destinés à produire des composés de di-, tri- ou tétrabenzyl-métal et consistant à combiner un sel métallique avec un composé (benzyl)<SUB>n</SUB>MgX<SUB>2-n</SUB> à une température inférieure ou égale à 30 °C, n valant 1 ou 2 et X étant un groupe monoanionique. La combinaison est réalisée dans un mélange de diluants comprenant entre 0 et 80 % en volume d'un diluant éthéré et un diluant choisi dans le groupe constitué par des diluants aromatiques, des diluants hydrocarbonés halogénés et des mélanges de ceux-ci. Ces procédés se caractérisent par l'utilisation de plusieurs mélanges de diluants, et, dans certains cas, par une utilisation minimale ou nulle de diluant éthéré.
