ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing biotin intermediates by photochemical cycloaddition of an imidazolin-2-one via a cyclobutanol intermediate of the formula Image where R1 and R2 are the same or different and selected from alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aryl and alkoxy, and R3 is substituted or unsubstituted lower alkyl, and oxidative rearrangement thereof to a novel lactone intermediate or the formula Image where R1, R2 and R3 are as above defined, in the presence of ruthenium trichloride and a metal hypochlorite is disclosed. The lactone intermediate may be reduced to a diol which can be converted by known chemical and/or microbiological methods to biotin or other intermediates thereof.
