Reaction of 1-O-acetyl-2,3,5-tri-O-benzoyl-.beta.-D-ribofuranose with 2- methoxyadenine to form 9-(2~,3~,5~-tri-O-benzoyl-.beta.-D-ribofuranosyl)-2- methoxyadenine, then deprotection of the 9-(2~,3~,5~-tri-O-benzoyl-.beta.-D- ribofuranosyl)-2-methoxyadenine to form spongosine is described. Synthesis of intermediates for use in the synthesis of spongosine is also described.
