The present invention relates to the synthesis of a sterespecific enzyme by the non-chromosomal transformation of a host. The transformation is accomplished by a viral vector which is non-infective but which is self-replicating and which contains a coding sequence for an enzyme which is capable of enantiospecific catalysis of an organic chemical.
