- 12 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to the novel composition, sulfated fullerenes, and to the process for making sulfated fullerenes by contacting fullerenes with fuming sulfuric acid at a temperature from about 25°C to about 100°C. The process produces fullerenes that contain primarily open chain and cyclic sulfate substituent groups, but may also contain on average a lesser amount of sulfonic acid groups, sultone groups, hydroxy groups and mixtures thereof. The sulfated fullerenes may be used as metal binders.
