A process is provided for the manufacture of free-flowing solid tertiary amine oxides having N-nitrosodimethylamine levels of less than about 250 ppb. The process comprises heating a mixture of a tertiary amine, a polar hydroxy alkyl solvent, an organic acid, and aqueous hydrogen peroxide, followed by removal of the solvent and water, preferably by azeotropic removal. The resultant tertiary amine oxides have good color without bleaching and are useful without further purification.

Méthode pour obtenir des oxydes d'amine tertiaire solides, à écoulement libre, avec des teneurs en N-nitrosodiméthylamine inférieures à environ 250 p.p.milliard. La méthode consiste à chauffer un mélange d'amine tertiaire, un solvant hydroxyalkylé polaire, un acide organique et un peroxyde d'hydrogène aqueux, puis d'éliminer le solvant et l'eau, de préférence par voie azéotropique. Les oxydes d'amine tertiaire ainsi obtenus possèdent une bonne couleur, sans blanchiment, et sont utilisables sans purification ultérieure.
