Vinyl ester of an alcohol (such as benzoin) is made by reaction of the alcohol with a 3-haloalkyl acid halide (such as 3-chloropropionyl chloride or bromide) in an anhydrous liquid reaction medium comprising an aprotic solvent (such as toluene) and a hydrogen halide acceptor (such as tertiary amine) at a temperature of at least 20°C.
