A matrix of artificial peptide sequences is disclosed that are preferentially recognized by auto-antibodies, specifically by autoimmune antibodies to be detected in patients afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis, enabling enhanced sensitivity and specificity in detection of these auto-antibodies in pre-symptomatic patients as well as patients showing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. The preferred peptide sequences have the general formula: [X (aa)n X]m, where X = citrulline residue, aa = amino acid with n = 0 to 8, m >= 1.
