A positioning system includes a passive, isotropic reflecting landmark at a fixed position and a device. The device transmits an electromagnetic pulse having a circular polarization and receives a return signal over a period of time. The return signal includes a reflected pulse from the reflecting landmark. The processes the return signal to isolate the reflected pulse from the return signal and to determine a range from the device to the reflecting landmark. The reflecting landmark includes a first passive reflector, a second passive reflector, and a static structure configured to statically position the second passive reflector at an angle relative to the first passive reflector. The device optionally moves in a particular direction while receiving the return signal, detects a Doppler shift in the reflected pulse portion of the return signal, and determines an angle between the particular direction and, a straight line between the device and the landmark.
L'invention concerne un système de positionnement comportant un point de repère réfléchissant, isotrope, passif, à une position fixe, et un dispositif correspondant. Ledit dispositif transmet une impulsion électromagnétique présentant une polarisation circulaire et reçoit un signal de retour sur une période de temps. Le signal de retour comporte une impulsion réfléchie provenant du point de repère réfléchissant. Le signal de retour est ensuite traité de manière à isoler l'impulsion réfléchie par rapport au signal de retour et à déterminer une distance entre le dispositif et le point de repère réfléchissant. Le point de repère réfléchissant comporte un premier réflecteur passif, un deuxième réflecteur passif et une structure statique conçue pour positionner de façon statique le deuxième réflecteur passif à un certain angle par rapport au premier réflecteur passif. Ledit dispositif peut éventuellement se déplacer dans une direction particulière lorsqu'il reçoit le signal de retour, détecte un décalage de Doppler dans la partie d'impulsion réfléchie du signal de retour, et détermine un angle compris entre la direction particulière et une ligne droite s'étendant du dispositif au point de repère.
