Abstract A synthetic gene which codes for at least one epitope from the immunodominant conserved region of HTLV-I env gp21 as well as hybrid genes utilizing the synthetic gene in conjunction with other epitopes from HTLV-I env gp46 and gp 21; the corresponding gene products, recombinant vectors containing the genes, methods for producing the polypeptides and methods for detecting antibodies to HTLV-I using the polypeptides of the invention are disclosed.
