ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Mono- and polysaccharides comprising one to about 20 saccharide units which also contain a reducing carbon atom are reacted with 3-halo- 1,2-propandiol in the presence of a cationic exchange resin to form 3-halo-2-hydroxypropyl glycosides or glycidyl glycosides. These glyco- sides react with natural polysaccharides such as starch and plant gums to form novel synthetic homo- and heteropolysaccharides with pendant saccharide side chains.
