Four synthetic peptide antigens corresponding to regions of the glycoprotein encoded by the env gene of HTLV1 are provided. These peptides which are immunologically reactive with HTLV-1 specific antibodies are useful in assays for detection of HTLV-1 infection or exposure and in compositions to elicit the production of antibodies against HTLV-1 in animals and man.
