2111208 9222339 PCTABS00018 A retractable syringe (10) that pulls the needle (22) and holder (18) from a fluid sealed releasable connection in the open forward end of the syringe barrel (22) to a position enclosed within the barrel, with the piston shaft (14) then being broken off at the piston (24) and the free end of the shaft inserted through the now open forward end of the syringe barrel, enclosing and sealing the needle holder and the remaining fluid in the barrel, with the shaft holding the needle from longitudinal movement within the barrel. The syringe can then be disposed of without allowing access to the needle or having fluid leakage.
