This invention addresses the problem of inventory management at a point of purchase (e.g., a vending machine) referred to as VS 110, by means of a mobile user equipment 150, (i.e., mobile phone or connected PDA). A summary of the inventory information from the vending machine is prepared and transmitted with each transaction. The model is based on a "critical time to transmit" logic. When the system judges that the time is critical to transmit the summary of its inventory data, it generates a signal (audio and/or visual) to attract customers with mobile phone to get discounted (or free) products. By fulfilling a transaction with the mobile phone, the customer also conveys the critical information into the back-end server which will later be used to optimize the inventory management. In this invention, we do not assume direct connectivity of the VS 110. The connection between the VS 110 and the service center (SC) 170 is indirectly created with the user's equipment through the messages that are securely exchanged.
