From raw image data obtained through magnetic resonance imaging or the like, an object is reconstructed and visualized in four dimensions (both space and time) by first dividing (109) the first image in the sequence of images into regions through statistical estimation of the mean value and variance (105) of the image data and joining (107) of picture elements (voxels) that are sufficiently similar and then extrapolating the regions to the remainder of the images by using known motion characteristics of components of the image (e.g., spring constants of muscles and tendons) to estimate the rigid and deformational motion of each region from image to image. The objects and its regions can be rendered and interacted within a four-dimensional virtual environment.

A partir d'une image brute obtenue par imagerie par résonance magnétique ou analogue, un objet est reconstruit et visualisé en quatre dimensions (à la fois dans l'espace et dans le temps). Pour ce faire on procède tout d'abord à une division (109) de la première image de la séquence d'images en régions en utilisant une estimation statistique de la valeur moyenne et de la variance (105) des données de l'image et en joignant (107) les points d'image (voxels) suffisamment similaires; puis on extrapole ces régions au reste des images à l'aide des caractéristiques de mouvement connues des composantes de l'image (p.ex. les constantes d'élasticité de muscles et tendons) afin d'évaluer le mouvement rigide et le mouvement de déformation de chaque région, image par image. L'objet et ses régions peuvent être affichés dans un environnement virtuel interactif à quatre dimensions.
