A connection admission control scheme for use in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks supporting multiple priority classes. Initially, a switching nodeconnected to the network receives a connection request. The connection request may be from one of multiple priority classes received at the node. Once the priority isdetermined, an equivalent cell rate of the connection request is computed and compared to an available cell rate which is the maximum cell rate that the node is able to handle for the determined priority. If the equivalent cell rate is less than the available cell rate, the connection request is admitted to the node. If the equivalent cell rate is greater than the available cell rate then the connection request is rejected. By admitting connection requests in this manner, the connection admission control scheme provides quality of service guarantees for the duration of the connection.
