An automatic disc handling system and method for retrieving and positioning information carrying discs between a storage position to a position of use is described. A displaceable robot having a pair of robotic arms is controlled by a computer connected to a robot controller and instructed to move to discrete positions, either in front of storage racks where a plurality of superposed lighting trays containing one or more discs are stored, or to a plurality of playback units disposed at said position of use to move selected ones of the disc to and from these positions and as requested by a person accessing the discs from a remote station. The robot is provided with a tray engaging element to move the tray in and out of its storage position, and the robotic arms of the robot are each provided with a picker mechanism to engage and remove the discs from the trays or the playback units and transport them to effectuate a function as dictated by the computer and the robot controller. The robotic arms are also adapted to invert the disc for access to information recorded on both sides thereof.
Système et méthode de manipulation de disques permettant la récupération et le positionnement de l'information en faisant passer les disques d'une position de stockage à une position de lecture de la façon décrite. Un automate mobile muni d'une paire de bras est contrôlé par un ordinateur connecté à un contrôleur qui reçoit les instructions de déplacement à des positions discrètes, soit vers les unités de stockage où plusieurs plateaux à faisceaux lumineux d'écriture superposés contenant un ou plusieurs disques sont stockés, soit vers le groupe d'unités de lecture disposées à la position d'utilisation convenue pour déplacer les disques sélectionnés vers les positions selon la demande d'une personne qui accède aux disques d'un poste éloigné. Le robot est muni d'un mécanisme d'insertion de plateau pour insérer et éjecter les plateaux de la position de stockage, et les bras de l'automate sont tous deux munis d'un mécanisme de préhension leur permettant d'insérer et d'éjecter les disques des plateaux des unités de lecture et les transporter pour effectuer une fonction commandée par l'ordinateur et le contrôleur automate. Les bras de l'automate sont aussi adaptés pour inverser le disque afin d'accéder à l'information enregistrée des deux côtés du disque.
