The performance and ease of management of wireless communications environments is improved by a mechanism that enables access points (APs) (12) to perform automatic channel selection. A wireless network can therefore include multiple APs, (12) each of which will automatically choose a channel such that channel usage is optimized. Furthermore, Aps (12) can perform automatic power adjustment so that multiple Aps (12) can operate on the same channel while minimizing interference with each other. Wireless stations are load balanced across Aps (12) so that user bandwidth is optimized. A movement detection scheme provides seamless roaming of stations between Aps (12).

L'invention concerne un mécanisme permettant d'effectuer une sélection de canal automatique au niveau des points d'accès d'un réseau et ainsi d'améliorer les performances et la facilité de gestion d'environnements de communication sans fil. Un réseau sans fil peut ainsi comprendre plusieurs points d'accès pouvant chacun sélectionner automatiquement un canal pour optimiser l'utilisation de chaque canal. Ces points d'accès peuvent également effectuer un réglage de puissance automatique pour que plusieurs points d'accès puissent fonctionner sur le même canal tout en réduisant les interférences entre les canaux. Les stations sans fil sont équilibrées en charge au niveau des points d'accès pour que la bande passante soit optimale. Un schéma de détection de mouvement permet aux stations de se déplacer entre des points d'accès sans qu'il y ait de coupures.
